For the Fujian press industry, the local journalists’ attitude towards the new media is moderately positive, which is inconsistent with their negative attitude towards the convergence of newspapers and new media. In other words, the journalists’ pessimistic views on media convergence are not because of their dislike of new technology but a manifestation of the institutional, organisational and individual complexities within the local press industry. The demographic factors that affect the journalists’ attitude towards new media, including age, years at work and type of newspaper, have unique connotations under the Chinese media system.

The lack of models for sporadic ALS has hampered efforts to identify disease mechanisms and therapeutic targets that apply broadly to multiple sporadic forms of ALS (3, 7). To address this, we derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from a cohort of sporadic ALS patients and generated induced motor neurons (iMNs) from these iPSCs. We show that similarly to C9ORF72 ALS iMNs, the sporadic ALS iMNs from all 6 donors degenerate significantly faster than controls and show pronounced mislocalization of transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43). Thus, these sporadic ALS iMNs display relevant disease processes.

Although the effects of media convergence from a journalist perspective are waiting to be further examined, a comprehensive view of the influence of new media on news production has been achieved by Chinese scholars. Existing studies indicate that journalists’ attitude towards new media is complicated. On one hand, the use of the Internet and we-media, such as QQ, Weibo and Wechat, has been considered to boost the work efficiency of journalists, enhance the interaction between journalists and readers and increase the transparency of news production (Wu and Zhang, 2015). On the other hand, an increasing number of journalists are also inclined to attribute the loss of ‘journalistic ideal’ to multifarious pressures provoked by new media (Ding and Wei, 2014). Given the development of mobile Internet and prevalence of we-media since the beginning of the 21st century, information and opinions from netizens have gradually become a vital source of news for traditional media and the public (Wu and Zhang, 2015; Zhou, 2014), and the objectivity of news and journalists’ authoritativeness have been impaired (Bai, 2013).

This decision means that the Chinese media must be dedicated to Party and government propaganda whilst earning profits and seeking for industry development. This institutional framework enabled the metropolis newspapers to emphasise the function of profitability that emerged in the mid-1990s. Differing from the party organs, the metropolis newspapers have consciously catered to the preferences of the audience in terms of content, including considerable emphasis on the timeliness, relevance and interesting aspects of the news, concentration on social and personal stories and a continuous increase in the proportion of entertainment and leisure contents. Zhao (1998: 159) opined that these measures are more about supplement than disobedience to the party organs, thereby extending the official ideology further to the social, personal and even mental domains.

The impetus for junior journalists to participate in the converging news production is the same consideration that prevents senior journalists from collaborating with the new media centre, that is, to achieve the balance between gain and cost. The industry and the journalists ‘inside the system’ (tizhinei) are likely to opt for political safety over financial return, whereas their counterparts ‘outside the system’ (tizhiwai) ascribe considerable importance to the latter than the former.

There are at least 3 potential reasons for the shared abnormalities in autophagosome formation and glutamate receptor levels we have observed. First, some sporadic ALS patients may harbor genetic variants that directly impair autophagosome formation. If so, this could induce the autophagosome formation defects that in turn could cause excess glutamate receptor accumulation. Alternatively, genetic variants affecting other aspects of proteostasis could lead to the accumulation of unfolded proteins, which might impair autophagosome formation through some unknown mechanism. The accumulation of unfolded protein could also impair overall protein turnover and lead to glutamate receptor accumulation. Third, the sporadic ALS patients could harbor genetic variants that affect vesicular signaling molecules, such as phosphatidylinositols, that regulate both endocytosis of surface proteins and autophagosome formation (38). It will also be important to determine how conserved these neuronal phenotypes are in other neurodegenerative diseases. One study has clearly shown that a Parkinson’s disease mutation in synaptojanin impairs autophagosome formation in iPSC neurons (38).

The case study of Fujian indicates that what lies beneath the persistent tension between newspaper offices and new media departments is substantively a conflict of economic interest that results from the competitive relationship amongst various media outlets within the local press group since the period of media conglomeration. Adjusting the administrative structure cannot reduce this tension as long as the economic logic is not thoroughly challenged.

Last year or the year before, I went to the trial over a deputy mayor in Fuzhou. Only another journalist and I went to the whole course of the first trial. He (a newspaper department supervisor) demanded strictly at that time that the number of online figures could not exceed 500. Plus, the next day he scolded (another journalist) in a loud voice, ‘It’s too foolish of you to have (only) offered them the lead of the foregoing news. You should have cut out a bit from each paragraph. You giving these 500 figures to others, who would read the newspaper?’ (Interviewee No. 14)

Simply speaking, media convergence is the process of integrating new media into the system of traditional media. Thus, journalists’ attitude towards the new media constitutes the foundation for better understanding of journalists’ attitude towards the convergence between traditional media and new media. Moreover, media convergence carries a prognosis that news production will move further to the direction towards timeliness, interactivity and use-centredness. Given that the newsroom routine adjusts rapidly, particularly as the audience increasingly engages in news production and professional boundaries blur further, the following questions need to be answered: Will the viewpoint of journalists towards new media become considerably negative? How will this attitude affect their perception of the convergence process between new media and traditional media?

Accordingly, the following questions must be answered in the context where the tension between newspapers and new media departments seems persistent: What will be the destiny of metropolis newspapers if they deviate from converging news production? Will other types of newspapers, due to their loss of market competitive edge to new media outlets, shift to the role of ‘Party Mouthpiece’ that has previously been performed by the party organs? Evidently, these questions can be explored in future research.

Our data indicate that motor neurons derived from C9ORF72 and at least a subset of sporadic ALS patients share similar defects in autophagosome formation and glutamate receptor accumulation. Importantly, PAR1 activation by 3K3A-APC can reverse these C9ORF72 and sporadic ALS disease processes in vitro and in vivo (Figure 7). We draw several key conclusions from our findings.
We hypothesized that phenotypic analysis of iMNs from these sporadic ALS patients and C9ORF72 ALS/frontotemporal dementia (FTD) patients would enable the identification of degenerative mechanisms that are shared by C9ORF72 and at least a subset of sporadic ALS motor neurons. We further hypothesized that pharmacologic agents capable of normalizing these phenotypes in C9ORF72 and sporadic ALS iMNs might also rescue neurodegeneration and lead to the identification of therapeutic targets with broad efficacy in the ALS population.
