The authors adopted a semi-structural interview and provided an outline for the journalists that mainly revolved around the following nine questions: (1) When did you start using new media in your daily work? (2) What is your reason for using new media? (3) What do you think is the role of new media in news production? (4) What measures have been adopted by the press group that you are currently working for in terms of media convergence? (5) Did such measures result in changes in your daily work? If yes, what are such changes? What can you say about these changes? (6) How do you interpret the effects of media convergence on journalists based on your personal experience? (7) What is your overall evaluation of the media convergence within the press group you are working for? (8) Are you aware of the measures of other press groups in terms of media convergence? What is your opinion on their measures? (9) What can you say about the viewpoint of the local press industry that media convergence is the way out for its current predicament? Specific to the interviewees of other categories, the questions varied in terms of how they are stated and their order of arrangement.

The insistence of local journalists to maintain professional boundaries results from the ideology of professionalism that has permeated throughout China’s journalism education and practice since the reform and opening-up policy. Such insistence also manifests the responsive identification of these journalists under the context in which the journalistic profession is increasingly declining (Donsbach, 2010).

A key molecular hallmark of ALS is the nuclear depletion and cytoplasmic accumulation of TDP-43 in motor neurons (14). The cytosolic accumulation of TDP-43 is thought to drive motor neuron degeneration (14, 15). Immunofluorescence verified that both C9ORF72 and sporadic ALS iMNs possessed a lower nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio of TDP-43 than controls (Figure 1, G–I; 2 controls, 2 C9ORF72 ALS, and 6 sporadic ALS patients). Thus, these sporadic ALS iMNs exhibit neurodegenerative processes.

June 2019: We have submitted a paper titled ‘‘Link Prediction Under Imperfect Detection: Collaborative Filtering for Ecological Networks’’ to IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering. In this work, we proposed a statistical generative model for ecological network link prediction. The challenge for this type of networks is that all the observed entries suffer from systematic under estimation–which is very different from online recommender systems. This is a collaborative research with Eugene Seo, Justin Clarke, and Rebecca–all from EECS at Oregon State.
Last year or the year before, I went to the trial over a deputy mayor in Fuzhou. Only another journalist and I went to the whole course of the first trial. He (a newspaper department supervisor) demanded strictly at that time that the number of online figures could not exceed 500. Plus, the next day he scolded (another journalist) in a loud voice, ‘It’s too foolish of you to have (only) offered them the lead of the foregoing news. You should have cut out a bit from each paragraph. You giving these 500 figures to others, who would read the newspaper?’ (Interviewee No. 14)
C9ORF72 regulates autophagy by promoting the RAB1A-dependent trafficking of the ULK1 autophagy initiation complex to the phagophore (16). Consequently, mTOR inhibitors were shown to be ineffective at rescuing autophagosome formation in C9ORF72-deficient neurons and it is unclear if pharmacological agents can restore normal autophagy initiation (16).

Contextualised within the relationship of state, media and journalists, the current study begins with a brief description of local journalists’ attitude towards new media. Thereafter, the authors discuss how local journalists perceive and evaluate media convergence, disclosing the implementation of the dominant convergence path and its influential mechanism. Consequently, this discussion lays an empirical foundation for exploring the regional diversity of China’s media convergence in the future. The following concrete questions will be discussed:

Total RNA was extracted from sorted iMNs on day 21 after transduction with a TRIzol RNA Extraction Kit (Life Technologies) and reverse transcribed with an Oligo dT primer using a ProtoScript II First Strand Synthesis Kit (NEB). RNA integrity was checked using the Experion system (Bio-Rad). Real-time PCR was performed with iTaq Universal SYBR Green Supermix (Bio-Rad) using primers shown in Supplemental Table 3.

As a manifestation of the administrative barrier within Fujian’s press groups, the estrangement between metropolis newspaper offices and the new media centre has a further impact on the relationship between journalists and editors. Even when providing news, metropolis newspaper journalists are rather reluctant to invest time and energy and are less willing to cooperate with editors than their counterparts from the party organ due to lack of support from departmental leaders. Hence, conflicts over role misplacement frequently occur during their communication with the editors of the new media centre.

Quantification of the effect of TMX2 reduction by shRNA lentiviral transduction in two independent control iPSC lines, as performed in Fig. 7. Induced motor neurons were generated from iPSCs using a seven factor (7F) differentiation system. The survival of HB9-RFP+/shRNA-GFP+ iMNs was tracked by imaging after the addition of 10 µM glutamate to the cultures. This article introduces child-raising blogs in China. Written by mothers and their 6- to 12-year-old offspring, child-raising blogs contain diverse material from and about a child’s daily life and issues relating to a mother raising her offspring. Six blogs from mothers and their daughters are studied under the aspect of generational relations and the voice of children online with the aim of understanding whether or how child-raising blogs in China are part of a changing discourse about the mother-daughter relationship. The article finds that as the objectified state of cultural capital, blogs present a smoothed-out hierarchical relationship between mother and daughter, and carry the possibility of bestowing a voice on children. Due to their continuous and permanent structure, which records opinions and content deemed important by the authors, blogs could be a catalyst or at least a magnifying lens for changes that are already occurring in family relations offline.

Jan. 2019: Check out this new submission: ‘‘Block-Randomized Stochastic Proximal Gradient for Low-Rank Tensor Factorization’’. This work uses a combination of randomized block coordinate descent and stochastic proximal gradient to decompose large and dense tensors with constraints and regularizations. The complexity saving is quite surprising. The total number of MTTKRPs (which dominates the CPD complexity) needed for the proposed algorithm is very small (see BrasCPD and AdaCPD in the figure).
The recruitment of interviewees was conducted for two rounds. Given the demonstrative effect of the media convergence of the Xiamen Daily Group within the province and even the entire industry, the authors contacted seven media practitioners from this organisation to undergo the first round of interview. Consequently, one director, one editor and five newspaper journalists were involved as interviewees in this round. After developing a preliminary knowledge of the opinions of the Xiamen Daily Group journalists towards media convergence, the authors conducted a second round of interview. Three directors, three editors and seven journalists were recruited as interviewees from several other press groups, including Fujian Daily Group, Fuzhou Daily News Press and Quanzhou Evening News Press, thereby promoting the diversity of the interviewees in the aspect of age, years at work and newspaper type. Except for one journalist from the Fujian Daily Group who was interviewed via telephone, all the 19 others underwent face-to-face interviews (Table 1).

After the Chongzhen Emperor's death, loyalist forces proclaimed a Southern Ming dynasty in Nanjing, naming Zhu Yousong (the Prince of Fu) as the Hongguang Emperor. In 1645, however, Qing armies started to move against the Ming remnants. The Southern Ming, again bogged down by factional infighting, were unable to hold back the Qing onslaught, and Nanjing surrendered on 8 June 1645. Zhu Yousong was captured on 15 June and brought to Beijing, where he died the following year. The dwindling Southern Ming were continually pushed farther south, and the last emperor of the Southern Ming, Zhu Youlang, was finally caught in Burma, transported to Yunnan, and executed in 1662 by Wu Sangui.

Two alternative paths are presently available for the local press industry to thoroughly address the issue of content for new media outlets. The first path is to remove the administrative hierarchy between metropolis newspapers and party organs, with the new media centre providing news to both newspapers and new media outlets for further editing. In this case, the new media outlets are not incorporated into the new media centre but remain at the same administrative level as the traditional media departments. Hence, the vertical communication between the new media centre and various new media outlets increases, yet the horizontal interaction between newspapers and new media outlets dramatically reduces. The second path is to insulate the newspapers from converging news production, with the centre producing content independently for new media outlets.
An in-depth interview was thereafter conducted to provide an explanation for journalists’ attitude towards new media as well as to answer the research questions 2 and 3. A total of 12 respondents who left their contact information were recruited as interviewees. Given that media convergence is a process of integration among all newspaper offices within one press group, the recruitment of the interviewees was conducted with the press group unit rather than the single newspaper office. Apart from journalists, the leadership and editors of new media centres who had worked in the newspaper newsroom were also recruited as interviewees to obtain an improved understanding of the influences of media convergence on the press industry. The different degrees of experience in news gathering and editing of these directors and editors could be beneficial, particularly their insider’s viewpoint, which will compliment and support that of the journalists. From February to March 2016, the authors recruited eight directors or editors of new media centres for in-depth interviews through snowball sampling.
Zhu Youjian was the fifth son of Zhu Changluo, the Taichang Emperor, and one of his low-ranking concubines, Lady Liu. When Zhu Youjian was four years old, his mother was executed by his father for reasons unknown and was buried secretly. Zhu Youjian was then adopted by his father's other concubines. He was first raised by Consort Kang, and after she adopted his eldest brother Zhu Youxiao, he was raised by Consort Zhuang.

All animal use and care were in accordance with local institution guidelines of the University of Southern California and the IACUC board of the University of Southern California with the protocol numbers 20546 and 11938. Wild-type C57BL/6J (strain: 000664), and C9-BAC (C57BL/6J-Tg(C9orf72_i3)112Lutzy/J, strain: 023099) were purchased from Jackson Laboratories. Mice were housed in standard conditions with food and water ad libitum in the conventional vivarium at the University of Southern California.

With either pulsatile glutamate treatment or neurotrophic factor withdrawal, iMNs from all 6 sporadic ALS patients degenerated significantly faster than control iMNs (Figure 1, B–F, and Supplemental Figure 1, M and N). iMNs derived from additional iPSC clones from the same sporadic ALS patients also degenerated faster than control iMNs (Supplemental Figure 1, O–Q). Thus, iMNs derived from these sporadic ALS patients degenerate significantly faster than controls and at a similar rate to C9ORF72 ALS iMNs. These findings strongly suggest that the donor sporadic ALS patients from which these iMNs were derived harbored genetic variants that contributed to their motor neuron disease. Therefore, iMNs from these patients have the potential to provide insights into mechanisms of neurodegeneration in sporadic ALS cases.
