King Goujian's army was known for scaring its enemies before battle because its front line consisted of criminals sentenced to death who committed suicide by decapitating themselves.[2] However, in the passage, "越王句踐使死士挑戰,三行,至吳陳,呼而自剄。", the literal translation of "死士" is "soldiers (who are) willing to die", not "criminals sentenced to death". "自剄" means to "commit suicide by cutting one's throat," which was a common way to end one's own life in Ancient China.[3]

Jan. 2019, Check out the new paper: ‘‘Learning Nonlinear Mixtures: Identifiability and Algorithm’’. In this work we push forward parameter identifiability of linear mixture models (LMM) to nonlinear ones. LMM finds many applications in blind source separation-related problems, e.g., hyperspectral unmixing and topic mining. In practice, however, the mixing process is hardly linear. This work studies a fundamental question: if there is nonlinearity imposed upon an LMM, can we still identify the underlying parameters of interest? The interesting observation of our work is that: under some conditions, nonlinearity can be effectively removed and the problem will boil down to an LMM identification problem — for which we have tons of tools to handle.

A doxycycline-inducible (Dox-inducible) NGN2, ISL1, LHX3 (NIL) polycistronic construct was previously integrated into the AAVS1 safe harbor locus of the C9-ALS patient iPSC line using CRISPR/Cas9 editing (4). Dox-NIL iMNs were generated by plating at approximately 25% confluence on Matrigel-coated plates and adding 1 mg/mL Dox in N3 media plus 7.5 μM RepSox 1 day after plating. Mouse primary mixed glia were added to the cultures on day 6, and Dox was maintained throughout conversion. iMN cultures were harvested on day 26.
An intronic GGGGCC repeat expansion in C9ORF72 is the most common cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), but the pathogenic mechanism of this repeat remains unclear. Using human induced motor neurons (iMNs), we found that repeat-expanded C9ORF72 was haploinsufficient in ALS. We found that C9ORF72 interacted with endosomes and was required for normal vesicle trafficking and lysosomal biogenesis in motor neurons. Repeat expansion reduced C9ORF72 expression, triggering neurodegeneration through two mechanisms: accumulation of glutamate receptors, leading to excitotoxicity, and impaired clearance of neurotoxic dipeptide repeat proteins derived from the repeat expansion. Thus, cooperativity between gain- and loss-of-function mechanisms led to neurodegeneration. Restoring C9ORF72 levels or augmenting its function with constitutively active RAB5 or chemical modulators of RAB5 effectors rescued patient neuron survival and ameliorated neurodegenerative processes in both gain- and loss-of-function C9ORF72 mouse models. Thus, modulating vesicle trafficking was able to rescue neurodegeneration caused by the C9ORF72 repeat expansion. Coupled with rare mutations in ALS2, FIG4, CHMP2B, OPTN and SQSTM1, our results reveal mechanistic convergence on vesicle trafficking in ALS and FTD.

Previous studies on the influence of media convergence in China either took a market- or norm-oriented approach. From a news production perspective, the current study analyses the interaction between the top-down design and bottom-up practices of journalists to disclose the influence of the dominant path of media convergence within the press industry of Fujian Province. A survey and 20 in-depth interviews show that the current media convergence practices of Fujian’s press industry fail to receive the support of journalists because of institutional, organisational and individual complexities, rather than technological reasons. This study discusses the implications of this finding for media convergence in China.
Simply speaking, media convergence is the process of integrating new media into the system of traditional media. Thus, journalists’ attitude towards the new media constitutes the foundation for better understanding of journalists’ attitude towards the convergence between traditional media and new media. Moreover, media convergence carries a prognosis that news production will move further to the direction towards timeliness, interactivity and use-centredness. Given that the newsroom routine adjusts rapidly, particularly as the audience increasingly engages in news production and professional boundaries blur further, the following questions need to be answered: Will the viewpoint of journalists towards new media become considerably negative? How will this attitude affect their perception of the convergence process between new media and traditional media?
